A lecture explaining why using our imaginations, and providing for others to use theirs, is an obligation for all citizens

Thomas Adam Johnson‘s insight:

There were quite a few take-aways from this article. Here are two examples.  "How many prisoners are there going to be, 15 years from now? And they found they could predict it very easily, using a pretty simple algorithm, based on asking what percentage of 10 and 11-year-olds couldn’t read" and "The challenge becomes, not finding that scarce plant growing in the desert, but finding a specific plant growing in a jungle."

10 Reasons Not to Hit Your Child

1. HITTING MODELS HITTING There is a classic story about the mother who believed in spanking as a necessary part of discipline until one day she observed her three- year-old daughter hitting her on…

Thomas Adam Johnson‘s insight:

As a teacher this seems obvious.  However, parents seem to forget that hitting is not the appropriate reaction to a child’s misdemeanours.  I particularly thought this was important, "Spanking guidelines usually give the warning to never spank in anger. If this guideline were to be faithfully observed 99 percent of spanking wouldn’t occur, because once the parent has calmed down he or she can come up with a more appropriate method of correction."
